Why is Dr. Smith being a board certified Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon, or a Diplomate of the America Board of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery important?  Not every Oral surgeon is board certified.

What does being board certified mean? The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) follows a comprehensive process to certify surgeons. Initially, ABOMS ensures the validity of their fundamental credentials, such as completion of dental school, surgical residency training, and holding an active state dental/medical license. However, board certification is exclusively granted to surgeons who possess an exceptional track record of accomplishments in the field and demonstrate an unwavering dedication to continuous learning throughout their professional journey.

All ABOMS surgeons have also:

1.)  Successfully completed of rigorous qualifying written and verbal examinations to guarantee the highest level of competence and safety in performing your surgery.  The ABOMS two-part examination process meticulously assesses the qualifications of oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS). These exams rigorously evaluate the foundational scientific knowledge as well as their clinical expertise and judgement. Experienced peer surgeons administer and evaluate the verbal examinations, ensuring a thorough and comprehensive assessment.

2.)  Diplomates of ABOMS are required to undergo yearly Certification Maintenance. In this process, surgeons demonstrate ongoing professional standing, current knowledge of surgical best practices, and a commitment to lifelong learning. The requirements include submitting documentation of licensure, undergoing tests to confirm cognitive expertise, providing evidence of hospital privileges or equivalent, and undergoing an official Office Anesthesia Evaluation (OAE) in select years.

3.)  As part of the ABOMS Certification Maintenance program, they subject surgeons to a rigorous peer evaluation process to validate their continued qualifications. This assessment involves fellow medical professionals reviewing Diplomate certification maintenance materials, providing an additional layer of scrutiny to ensure the surgeons' capabilities in collaborating effectively with patients and medical teams.

4.)  Every 10 years the written examination has to be taken to renew the Board certification.

While adeptly balancing his professional commitments and family responsibilities, Dr. Smith has consistently exhibited a strong dedication to his community. His involvement spans across a diverse array of service projects, showcasing his unwavering commitment to making a positive impact. Furthermore, he selflessly volunteers his surgical expertise in countries with limited medical resources, where access to proper healthcare is a challenge. This exemplifies his compassionate nature and his fervent desire to contribute to the well-being of underserved populations around the world.
